Where space allows, a pair of footstools is a lovely touch, creating a sense of symmetry in a room (not to mention avoiding arguments about sharing). These buttoned fabric beauties create a classic look and the generous size means there’s room for a couple of small ones to squeeze on each one when they’re watching TV.
]]>This depends on where you plan to put it. Determining the size is all about understanding scale: if the destination is a spacious living room, a larger armchair or recliner chair with ottoman will work; if it’s going into a guest bedroom, consider one of smaller stature – tub chairs and rattan chairs are compact wonders. Keep in mind the other furnishings in the room so that the size of your armchair works with them, not against them.
Think about your room’s current design scheme and the core purpose of your new purchase. Do you want the armchair to be a design focal point at special gatherings? Then how about a wingback chair or wingback with exposed wood and less padding, upholstered in a vibrant velvet. Alternatively, try something with a vintage air and stately feel such as a Chesterfield armchair in a tobacco shade. If are you longing for somewhere soothing to sink into with a glass of wine at the end of a long day, choose a light and lived-in armchair that spoils you with comfort. Look out for luxurious feather and down cushions with a coil-sprung seat platform, for example.
Do you want to your armchair to blend in or stand out from the rest of the room? Colour will help you to fine-tune the level of coordination but material and texture are also crucial. Add a little twist of character by incorporating contrasts in features such as the studs, piping and legs. If you are looking for a more daring combination, then experiment with patterns such as houndstooth and patchwork inspired by a flicker of colour elsewhere in the room.
Footstools are great for kicking back and work well if your armchair is going to be the centrepiece of a large lounge or TV room. If it’s more formal, a footstool may seem out of place. You also need to consider space: is there enough room to kick out a recliner footstool?
Remember: if you’re dying for a footstool but your beloved armchair doesn’t have one, an ottoman works just as well. Make sure its height matches that of the armchair's seating platform to maximise comfort.
Shop well...
]]>Here's a few ideas and suggestions.
Modern LED and spot lighting will kill the mood in the vintage bedroom. Instead, you want a single overhead light dressed, as here, with a simple shade, and a couple of table lamps either side of the bed to throw gentle pools of light over the room.
We have a great selection of pendant lighting and table lamps.
As if left by the maid ready for a bedroom’s occupant to wear the next day, every vintage-style sleep space should have a favourite garment strung over the bedpost, draped over an old tailor’s dummy or hooked over the wardrobe door.
You could even opt to store all your clothes on a vintage clothes rail for a full-on, glamorous, 1950s dressing room look.
We currently have this style of chandelier in store and online as well the table lamps, flora and mirrored bedsides - we'd love to see you in store and of course visit online anytime.
]]>Why not venture off into the unknown and get a few colour charts from companies like Little Greene, Fired Earth or Farrow & Ball? These companies all have one thing in common – besides exciting names for their paint, such as “Dead Salmon” or “Elephant’s Breath” – they have an array of unusual colours to choose from. Little Green also offers paints that are truly authenticated historical paint colours in association with English Heritage. Researched and developed by historian Patrick Baty, Little Greene's "Colours of England" collection offers a spectrum of 60 period shades from Georgian to post-war. They include Shrimp and Orange Aurora from the 1950s, Middle Brown - a British Standard paint colour of the 1930s- and, from the Regency palette, Blue Verditer - an English colour found during analysis of the entrance hall of Kenwood House, London.
But what it boils down to, is do you like the colour? And if you don't, it's not exactly a disaster. Even at the high end of the price spectrum, it's still the cheapest way to introduce colour into the home.
Fashion plays a big part in our colour choice. For three years of the 1990s, Farrow & Ball's best-selling colour was Sudbury Yellow. Now, replaced by a more popular blue-green palette, it doesn't even feature in its top 30. Reds sell better in the winter, and yellow is predicted to make a comeback.
Before you start splashing grey on the walls or buying grey furniture, make sure you choose the right shade of grey. There are three common colour undertones that can appear in grey. These are purple, green and blue. Grey that has a green undertone is usually more neutral. Such grey shades blend with many different colours as well as wood furniture.
Blue-based greys are popular choices for many people because they are bolder. They work well with bright colours such as yellow or red, as well as warm textures like wood and brass or bronze. These colour and texture touches prevent the blue-grey from creating a cold colour tone.
Have a look at our pinterest board ‘grey is the new black’ for some inspirational pictures – and don’t be scared to try out a new shade when you next renovate a room.

DO's
-Dust regularly using a soft lint free cloth
-Vacuum regularly using a soft brush – crumbs and fluff can cause premature wear
-Wipe away liquid spills and stains using a soft moist cloth.
DONT's
Do not soak the upholstery if it becomes over wet remove excess liquid and allow to dry naturally.
-Do not use household detergents, wax or spray polish or any proprietary brand fluids or abrasive cleaners on the leather as this will damage its surface.
Example of overly wet leather
If the surface of the leather becomes scuffed, scratched, damaged in any way or the surface changes colour then contact a leather specialist for advice and/or repair.

What is your piece of leather furniture made from?
1) aniline
2 ) semi-aniline
3 ) pull up Pu - imitation leather
4) other
Example of PU leather seat on dining chair
We recommend the use of a proprietary leather cream.
What does leather cream do? Does it feed leather?
Yes, it contains natural oils and waxes to soak in and feed leather. However, only a few leathers actually need feeding. These are unfinished leathers like aniline and pull up. The rest of the leather on the market contains a painted finish and lacquer coating and so cannot be and do not need fed. These leathers need their finish protected - this is what the protection cream does.
Example of leather cream - we recommend products that are of good quality. Other brands are available.
Will leather protection cream damage my leather?
No, it contains no solvents or abrasives or any other chemical that can cause damage to your leather. It has the exact opposite effect: it helps prevent the leather from being damaged.
Does the leather protection cream prevent staining?
It helps repel stains, both oil and water based. Common ones are dye transfer from clothes and juice or tea spills. It will prevent dye being transferred and it will retain other stains on the surface so they can be easily wiped off.
I have a natural (absorbent leather) is it safe to use?
It is excellent on these types of leather: Aniline, Pull Up and oily/waxy pull ups. Two applications are necessary as the first will totally be absorbed by the leather. It will stop the leather from absorbing any stains, which it otherwise would do. It also lubricates the leather fibres preventing them from abrading one another and so will stop your leather from wearing.
Will it make my leather slippery?
No, as long as the directions are followed correctly using the product sparingly it will not make your leather slippery.
Does leather protection cream make my leather shine?
One application will not, it will match the sheen your leather already is. If you want to make your leather shiny, just apply more.
Will it alter the appearance of the leather in anyway?
No. It matches the leathers natural appearance. It will not darken the leather or make it shine.
Can it also be used on imitation leather?
Yes. It can be used on any imitation leather such as vinyl, plastic and PU.

]]>We will show you some options and give you tips how to seat a crowd this Christmas!
Check our pinterest board for Spare Seats and ideas on seating!
Cushion it
Big pouffes are wonderful to provide extra seating and they are soft enough to keep them all year around, when squashed into corners.
They are lightweight and flexible, but provide ample seating for at least one adult (or two kids at a push!).
Get that footstool
You may have been offered to purchase a footstool with your last purchase of an armchair and thought, when will I ever going to use it – well think again! Footstools are not only great to put your feet on when reading a book they can also provide that much needed extra seat during Christmas. For a small investment you will have a stool that matches your chair and will keep the living room design scheme coordinated. Some larger sofas offer generous footstools, either as an extra seat at the end of the sofa or as a double up coffee table/ storage footstool. These are great for Christmas and Family visits.
Bench!
Benches are great to sit on. You can keep them in hall during the year to offer seating when putting your shoes on, or you place it in the bedroom – either as a window seat or in front of the bed instead of a blanket box, for that boutique hotel look we all love. Just pull a bench under the dining table and you will be surprised how many people you can sit!
Be creative…
You might see a vintage wooden barrel – don’t see it for what it is, see it as an extra seat or side table during the year. Plunder your guest bedroom for that extra chair and don’t be afraid that the patterns don’t match – think eclectic mix of furniture! And voila the whole family has a seat and everybody is happy…

Dust furniture once a week using a soft cloth and, while doing so, buff up the surface to restore its lustre. Despite what manufacturers of furniture polish would have us believe, wood does not need closer attention more than a couple of times a year at most.
Don't avoid dusting furniture. Frequent dusting removes airborne deposits that build up in a filmy layer and can scratch the surface.
Clean, dry, soft cloths or feather dusters will effectively remove dust; however, to avoid scattering the dust into the air, where it floats until landing back on furniture surfaces, dampen the cloth very slightly.
1. To clean the finish on your wood furniture just use warm water and mild dish soap. Cleaning furniture with water won't hurt it -- just be careful not to soak it. Use an old toothbrush for hard-to-get areas. Wipe the dirt off the surface with soft cloths or paper towels until they come up fairly clean. Then dry off any residual moisture with a soft cloth.
2. After a good cleaning, the best way to protect the finish is to use a good-quality soft paste wax. Apply a thin coat as directed on the label. Wait five minutes and buff lightly with a soft (shoe) brush or cloth. Wait another 30 to 60 minutes and buff/brush again with a bit more vigor. You'll see a beautiful shine return to the finish that will last for many months. Do not use sprays, especially any containing silicone. The only substance that should go near your furniture is a good-quality wax polish - try Antiquax, £3.95, or Jonelle Beeswax Furniture Polish, £5.25; both from John Lewis branches. Apply a small amount of polish with a soft cloth and work it into the wood in the direction of the grain. Then go away and make a cup of tea. After a half hour or so, return to the piece of furniture and buff the surface using a clean soft cloth, again rubbing with the grain.
The idea is to remove excess polish so fold the cloth over as you work to prevent a build-up on the material. Otherwise you will be rubbing in the polish you have just taken off.
3. Keep your furniture out of the sun. The temperature of the summer sun coming through a window can go above 60C degrees. It will cook fine finishes, fading and destroying them over time, and dry out and shrink the wood, which will cause cracks. To keep wood in good condition, position it away from direct sources of heat, such as radiators, and keep it out of sunlight. Once the sun has bleached out the colour, which happens much more quickly than you would believe, the damage is irrevocable.
4. Don't place wood furniture near heating units or vents. Dry heat will cause the wood to dry and shrink, leaving cracks. Use a humidifier in the drier months to bring the moisture up to the 40 to 45 percent level.
5. There are several ways to remove the white hazy ring or spot that the hot coffee mug made on your table. The least invasive way is to rub it with a mild abrasive, such as non-gel toothpaste mixed with baking soda or cooking oil mixed with ashes. You can rub it in a small spot with your finger or use a soft cloth on larger areas.
How to apply Wax!
For fine furniture or treasured family heirlooms, use this three-step cleaning and care routine.
1. Clean approximately every year with a commercial cleaning product (such as Formby's Deep Cleaning Build-Up Remover) using #0000 steel wool. Work with the grain and follow product directions carefully.
2. Restore as needed, especially from sun fading, using a commercial finish restoring product such as Howard Restor-A-Finish. Choose a shade closest to the wood stain and apply with #0000 steel wool to a small section at a time. Work with the grain of the wood and use light to moderate pressure. Immediately wipe with a soft, lint-free cloth, such as cheesecloth.
3. Feed as a monthly routine using an orange oil or wax (try Feed-N-Wax beeswax) to prevent drying and cracking.
Enjoy your wooden furniture longer with these tips!
